Hepatitis A is a liver disease of the virus (HAV). The virus spreads primarily when an person who is uninfected (and unvaccinated) eats food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. The disease is heavily associated with unsafe water or food, poor sanitation, poor personal hygiene, and oral-anal sex.

In contrast to hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but can lead to weakening symptoms and fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is often fatal. Overall, the World Health Organization estimated that in 2016 7,134 individuals died globally from hepatitis A (representing 0.5 percent of death from viral hepatitis).
