Although women make up half of the workforce, women are still rare in management roles, and this is no different in the entertainment industry. A research under the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative(Aii) found that women only directed four of 2018's top 100 grossing films.

At the panel "Make the (In)visible: Data-Driven Era Radical Transparency," Jan. 25 organized at Sundance with the Aii and moderated by Aii ceo Stacy Smith, actress Tessa Thompson officially introduced the "#TIMESUPX2 TIME'S UP 4 percent Challenge" to address the gap. This mission requires entertainment people to "announce their commitment to[ working]With a female film director in the next 18 months. "This effort was publicly produced by dozens of people in front of and behind the camera, as well as seven major studios including Warner Bros and MGM.
