Forgiveness is a cornerstone of Christian faith. We recognize that Christ died to receive forgiveness, and we understand that we are entitled to forgive others. But sometimes we may not completely understand the necessity and power of true forgiveness due to a lack of understanding or feelings of bitterness that we have not dealt with.

Once I met Jesus, I would have grudges like that. Especially when I found myself or others treated unfairly. But when I was rescued, everything changed, including my desire to let go of crimes, and to forgive more readily. When we understand the magnitude of an ideal God recognizing each of our horrible, selfish, even terrible deeds and thoughts, and still choosing to love and forgive us, it is so much easier to show compassion and forgiveness to others. Because when you understand God, your outlook and the way you see life change.

Each problem, problem, irritation or provocation seems to hold no weight in the light of eternity. It's hard to carry a grudge when you interact with the Lord who gave his son for you every day. "Thank you, God, for everlasting life and freedom, but I can't just forgive my sister for refusing to watch my boys." So if April reads this to my old college friend, I forgive you without asking to ruin half of my wardrobe... And I'm sorry to cover your car keys in that moment. On both times, fine.
