Every year, most of us look forward to the summer arrival. It's a time for barbecues in the backyard, pool parties, and sunshine relaxation. Sadly, for pesky insects, summer is also a favorite time of year. You may be tempted to go to town with chemical sprays to wipe them out if you see a cockroach scuttling across the floor or experience an ant infestation.

Traditional pesticides, however, contain many ingredients, not just insects, that are harmful to all living creatures. Take a look at your natural pest control strategies for the most common bug invaders to keep you, your family and your pets safe this summer.

Ants are some of the most common domestic insects in the summer. Drawn indoors by the seductive smells of overripe fruit or sticky jam spills, they are hard to remove once your counters have been chosen as a source of food. While harmless, it's not appealing to see thousands of ants running around your food. Ants are generally averse to the scent of peppermint, however, and it's easy to repell your own natural insect.

Including dousing ant-prone areas with homemade peppermint spray, the most effective way to keep these insects at bay is to remove the food source of the ants. It includes being vigilant to clean up after each meal. Wipe the surfaces of the kitchen every night and be sure to sweep and mop every few days at least.

There may be no household insect as hated as the bed bug, and the warm weather in the summer just helps them to grow. Such crafty standards will actually move throughout the home to different pieces of furniture, so it may not always be enough to get rid of the infested mattress. Luckily, diatomaceous earth use has been shown to be effective in killing a variety of household insects including bed bugs. Diatomaceous earth is a fossilized algae sand type.
