Sure, when it comes to fun ways to communicate a message between friends, emojis are the latest and greatest. Did you know, though, that in 1999 the first emoji was created? A coder hired by the Japanese mobile service provider has developed the first 180 emojis. These little icons have grown from the traditional smiley face over the past 20 years to include everything from bugs to mermaids, and so much more.

It wasn't long before other mobile companies started to understand emojis' appeal, and by 2010, Unicode adopted and standardized them, enabling them to be used outside of Japan. Emojis have since become a common piece of mobile technology and has now become a significant form of communication among the billions of people worldwide using the internet. It wasn't long before the phenomenon was noticed by online marketers and they started to wonder how they could use them to appeal to their members.
