In 1970, at the US Grant Hotel in San Diego, some 145 young people gathered to share their passion of comic books. Today, 50 years later, over 130,000 fans are regularly meeting up for Comic Con in downtown San Diego: International, a huge nerdy gathering that has become a pop culture linchpin.

As the birthplace of franchises such as Hellboy and highly popular promotional spaces for everything from Star Wars to the Avengers to The Lord of the Rings to Twilight, Comic Con brings together cosplayers, comic readers, and fans of all kinds to attend panels, get celebrity autographs, and celebrate their favorite fandom.

Today, as in 2010 when the Marvel Cinematic Universe's real-life Avengers attended a table, it's frequented by celebrities. Yet revealing their colors wasn't always a place for Hollywood. The small event remained below 10,000 for about twenty years. It's crazy how far the little con has come and how many wonderful things it brings to the world!
