Singing, like any other performing art, is ability. And just as dancers or guitar players need to continue to practice their skills, singers need to make sure they keep their singing muscles in shape, and warming up your voice is an enormous part of the whole routine that singers need to keep up with in order to sound best.

Since the muscles in our throat and mouth are under a lot of stress, making sure they don't wear out is crucial. Just as bodybuilders and sportsmen warm up their muscles before a workout, singers need to make sure that they warm up their voices before trying hard notes or a long session of vocal exercises.

Different singers have different ways to warm up their voices, and some personalized voice exercises may be given to practice, depending on your own voice. A general set of warm-up exercises will work just fine for most, though.

In this infographic, the seven warm-up exercises are a good start and cover all the basic muscles a singer needs to stretch each before a long day of singing, or just keep in practice.
