Beginning today, Jan 14, Microsoft will end support for Windows 7. This means it will not provide more software updates to customers or software patches to deter cyber attacks.

While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware without continuing software and security updates, "Microsft wrote on its website. "In addition, customer service from Microsoft will no longer be available for offering technical support to Windows 7."

Microsoft has suggested that people who still use Windows 7 should either update to Windows 10 if their computer is not older than three years, or buy a new computer. For a single computer an upgrade to Windows 10 will cost $139.

Net Applications has found that around 32.74 percent of all laptops are still operating on Windows 7 as of December, while Windows 10 is running on over 900 million computers.

Latest computers have improved hardware which helps to run computers quickly while supporting advanced software but it can be slowed down by upgrading to new software on an older device. Windows 10 carries new features including the latest security options such as facial recognition and fingerprint recognition to log in that your old device may not support it.
