Coronaviruses are a family of viruses known to contain strains which in mammals and birds could potentially cause deadly illness. WHO is working closely with global experts, governments and partners to extend scientific knowledge on this new virus rapidly, track the spread and virulence of the virus, and advise countries and individuals on health-safety measures to prevent the spread of this epidemic.

Thousands have now died from the novel coronavirus that first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. Tens of thousands of cases have been confirmed in China, and experts say they expect the numbers to keep rising.

Though China has had the vast majority of cases, global health officials are worried about the virus, which can cause pneumonia. Dozens of cases were confirmed in more than 20 countries, and the first death outside China was reported by the Philippines. The majority of those affected by the virus had traveled from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
