Hepatitis A is a disease of the hepatitis A virus (HAV) in the liver. The virus is spread mainly when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) person ingests food or water tainted with an infected person's feces. The disease is closely linked to unhealthy food or water, insufficient sanitation, poor personal hygiene and oral-anal sex.

Hepatitis A, unlike hepatitis B and C, does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but can lead to debilitating symptoms and fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is often fatal. Overall, the WHO estimated that 7,134 people died of hepatitis A worldwide in 2016 (representing 0.5 per cent of deaths from viral hepatitis).
