Oscars 2020: Viewership Shrinks to a Record Level #Infographic

Once upon a time, the annual Oscars was one of the most anticipated television events of the year with audience worldwide waiting to be honored for their favorite films. Viewership for the same show has, however, declined significantly for a few years. In fact, the live show had an audience of around 23.6 million this year–a 20 per cent drop from last year's 29.5 million viewership.

Experts argue that the main reason for the decline in viewership is due to online streaming, which has become prevalent over time. Others also suggest that the event took place on an earlier date of 2020, which likely diminished the hype.

Another potential reason for low-viewership may be that the Academy Awards have for some time now been celebrating low-budget movies. South Korean film Parasite won Best Picture award this year. But most audiences haven't seen the movie and prefer the traditional blockbuster hits to low-budget creations instead.
