Together with Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer at the University of Georgia, a group of researchers from the United States and Australia conducted a study of the plastic waste levels in the world's ocean. China and Indonesia were the biggest culprits of ocean pollution according to their results. Nevertheless, TheWall Street Journal estimates that the two countries combined are responsible in global waters for more than a third of plastic waste.

Researchers reported China eradicating nearly 8.8 million metric tons of mismanaged plastic waste in the year 2010. It has also been estimated that about 3.53 million metric tons of waste have ended up in the ocean.

Likewise, Indonesia was responsible for 3.2 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste, 1,29 million tons of which were marine plastic debris.

The Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam include other countries found guilty of' ocean pollution.' It has also been stated that the U.S. contributes about 0.11 million tons of plastic waste in the ocean-annually.
