An EMP or electromagnetic pulse is caused by a nuclear explosion. It's an explosion of electro magnetic radiation. If this type of attack happens, it could lead to unexpected variances in magnetic and electrical fields which could cause voltage damage and current surges. Massive damage could be done by electronic and electrical systems

With a nation's ability to lose power grid, residents and businesses would not only lose power for an unspecified amount of time, but all people would also be made inaccessible by hospitals and law enforcement agencies.

There are many variables to the basic features of an attack. Of these factors the most relevant is the detonation height. Lower altitudes with multiple types of bombs can do more damage to what is on the ground. Looking at the bombs used for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for example, the altitudes were 600 meters and 500 meters respectively, doing maximum damage to the facilities in the areas.
