While women make up half of the workforce, women are still rare in leadership roles and that is no different in the entertainment industry. A research under the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative(Aii) of the University of Southern California found that four of the top 100 grossing films of 2018 were directed by women.

At the panel "Make the (In)visible: Radical Accountability in the Data-Driven Era" Jan. 25 presented with the Aii at Sundance and moderated by Stacy Smith, founder of the Aii, actress Tessa Thompson officially launched the "#TIMESUPX2 TIME'S UP 4 percent Challenge" to discuss the inequality. The initiative calls for entertainment people to "announce their commitment to[ working] with a female director on a feature film in the next 18 months." This pledge was made publicly by dozens of people in front of and behind the camera, as well as by seven major studios such as Warner Bros and MGM.
