The coronavirus spreads like wildfire and as a result – more and more people choose to stay at home and isolate themselves from those in society. Sadly, this also means that many American companies have closed their doors for an unspecified period of time, contributing to an spike in people now left without a legitimate source of income.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance has risen sharply in the past week according to the U.S. Department of Labor. In reality, in the week ending 14 March, the authorities estimate the initial jobless figure to be about 281,000. It is also the highest amount recorded since 2017, when Hurricane Harvey caught America.

Unfortunately, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the government anticipates that this is only the beginning and thing will get worse in the coming days because many businesses are pursuing mass layoffs.

Also this week, the NewYork Times published over 600,000 jobless claims in 15 states. This means that the number nationally could well reach a million. In this regard, Goldman Sachs economist David Choi says that by the end of this week the figures will rise to over 2.25 million – as the damage from coronavirus increases.

The rapid and dramatic rise in unemployment claims illustrates the devastating complexity of the crisis that has engulfed the entire world. It has also put a screeching halt to the global economy and a beginning of American recession.
