According to a study published by Business Insider, due to coronavirus outbreak nearly one third of the world's population is under some sort of lockdown.

The largest shutdown happens in India where 1.3 billion people are forced to stay indoors. India's President, Narendra Modi, ordered a 21-day lockdown beginning on March 25 but later extending the curfew until May 1.

The lockdown imposed in India, even though the pandemic was at its height, exceeds the scale of those that happened in China.

Strict stay-at-home directives to varying degrees were often imposed by the various American states. But some states are now starting to loosen the restrictions given the fear of spreading.

Nationwide lockdowns are also found in European countries like France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom, home bounding over 300 million people. Russia also took similar protective steps, quarantining around 132 million people.

Countries in Latin America including Peru, Argentina, Panama, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia and Paraguay also took military assistance and enforced strict lockdowns. Ecuador has also requested its residents to remain at home, with more than 11,000 COVID-19 cases, one of the highest in Latin America.

The Philippines is now imposing a strict lockdown which affects around 100 million people. In fact, the Philippine President Duterte is quoted as saying that anyone who violates the quarantine will be shot down.

Jordan is also implementing a similar plan which will prosecute anyone arrested on the street for up to one year in jail.

The diagram below shows the number of people required to remain in lockdown to control the lockdown spread. It seems that all major countries in South Africa, except Kenya and Uganda, have placed lockdowns in full swing.
