Bacterial resistance to antibiotics which are widely used is increasing. Yet what is causing antibiotic resistance, how is the spread of antibiotic resistance and what are the consequences? View this infographic for more information. Annually in the United States, at least 2 million people develop severe infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, resulting in the death of 23,000 of those individuals.

Antimicrobial resistance used to be mainly limited to health care environments rather than impacting the general population, but more drug-resistant infections have appeared in urban settings in the last 10 years.

By 2050, the Wellcome Trust estimates that resistant infections will be the number one cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 10 million deaths attributed annually. Given the small number of potential antimicrobial agents in the pharmaceutical pipeline, problems that greatly outweigh the existing big global diseases such as Aids, tuberculosis and malaria may be tackled.
