Unemployment on the Rise Along With Covid-19 #infographic

The coronavirus pandemic has caused several businesses to have their workers fired. In fact, more than 6.6 million people in the US applied for unemployment in the week ending March 28. It is the highest number that the US has registered. Department of Labor, which also expects an improvement in the weeks that follow.

Consultancy company Challenger, Gray and Christmas examined the sectors that are making the most job losses in this way. In their study they find a total of 222,000 job losses in March – up from February's just 56,000. This suggests that there were 347,000 layoffs in the first quarter of 2020 – up from the 190,000 reported in the same quarter of 2019.

The entertainment and leisure sector, according to their report, saw the most layoffs – 37 per cent or 83,000 workers. This is not shocking, of course, because tourism and entertainment facilities like cinemas, concert halls, amusement parks, malls, and restaurants have been closed for some time.

Through these testing periods the National Association of Theater Owners have demanded the assistance of the government.

Many companies forced to let go of their staff included banking, manufacturing organizations and non-profit organisations.
