The burning tropical sun beats down on the parched, salt-encrusted skin of Terry Jo; there is no relief. Much of the time she holds her eyes shut, it's too vivid, the glinting waves make her dizzy and the stings of salt water. It's been 4 days since she and her father lost the Bluebelle, the sailboat she had been aboard.
Terry Jo drifts in and out of consciousness, reclining sluggishly on a flimsy 3-foot (.9 meter) oblong cork raft as it bobs on the waves. The tiny raft wasn't built for extended use; some of the rope webbing has given way, it's beginning to break down.
