44 Closest Stars and How They Compare to Our Sun #infographic

Stars have captivated humanity's imagination ever since our existence dawned. We know the sun is Earth's nearest star but what about the planets outside our solar system? This infographic examines the 44 nearest stars to us, analyzing each star 's size, luminosity, constellations, systems and possible planets.3

Alpha Centauri is the nearest star to Earth after the sun, at a stunning distance of around 4.3 light years away. In fact, Alpha Centauri is a triple star system which includes Proxima Centauri at 4,244 light years, Alpha Centauri A at 4,365 light years and Alpha Centauri B at 4,37 light years. So technically, the nearest star is Proxima Centauri. Alpha Centauri A represents the system 's largest and brightest star. This is about 10 percent larger than our sun, 22 percent higher, and 150 percent brighter.

The burning question is, have planets at Alpha Centauri? In 2016 scientists revealed the discovery of an exoplanet super-Earth orbiting our nearest celestial neighbor, Proxima Centauri, the system's smallest star. It is predicted that the planet Proxima Centauri b is a rocky and temperate world. The (habitability of Proxima Centauri b) has not been determined but scientists speculate that Proxima Centauri 's immense solar flares will make the planet incompatible with life. Such flares, however, may be uncommon, or UV-resistant species may inhabit the earth.
