When asked about the best time to send emails, email marketers often replied, "Tuesday through Thursday morning, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m .." It was common industry knowledge that people tend to open their emails in the morning. But as users become increasingly mobile, email opens happen at all hours on all computers. Let's visit some current email marketing trends that create open rate shifts, and how they affect your next email sending.

An Experian email marketing benchmark study across all industries found that recipients were surprisingly active late at night. Specific open rates ranged from 8 pm to 11:59 pm to 21.7 per cent, and from 12 am to 4 am to 17.6 per cent. Moreover, with open rates of 4.2 percent and 3.2 percent respectively, this late-night party was more likely to click through. Such night owls have also had the highest click-through level for all times of the day. Earnings per email were also the highest in the group from 8 pm to 11:59 pm

Moreover, over 54 per cent of emails are now opened on a mobile device. A 2016 Deloitte Mobile User Survey showed that 40 per cent of consumers check their phones within five minutes of waking up. About 30 % of consumers test their devices five minutes before they go to sleep after the day has ended. And about 50 per cent test their computers in the middle of the night. With consumers constantly active on their mobile devices, it is important to test sends outside the typical morning hours, particularly outside of the normal nine to five working hours spent at an office desktop.
