There is a malfunction in the computers. By losing essential data it can hobble your productivity, your company and leave a void in your digital memory.

Although many are doing their work and playing on far-flung servers now (we store our messages in Gmail and keep our family images on Facebook), vital files on your Laptop or mobile are likely to be unrecoverable if hardware fails.

Seagate and Harris Interactive conducted a survey of 2,205 adults in the U.S. — 90% of whom thought it was worth their digital content. Yet 30 % of women surveyed don't back up their files at all. That's never backed up when compared to 19 per cent of men. Only 10 percent of adults checked back up their files daily.

And given the prevalence of cloud storage services like DropBox and Carbonite, 8 per cent of respondents still use them, preferring external hard drives and USB flash drives.
