Sometimes the importance of crowd control, crowd management and a proper emergency evacuation plan is ignored before a catastrophic human stampede occurs. Throughout history human stampedes and crushes have occurred at crowded events, typically caused by panic spreading through the crowd like wildfire. Something as simple as a luggage trick, as with the Hajj Stampede in 2006, has triggered a deadly human stampede.
In an article on The Independent's Bethnal Green Tube tragedy, writer Godfrey Holmes observed that "stempedes begin in the wild when animals, led by herd instinct, bolt away from perceived danger to perceived health. While apparently more moral beings, people enter stampedes for the same purpose.
