St. Louis has the highest death toll per 100,000 residents. Approximately 36 of every 100,000 St. Louis people are shot and killed by police. This is 23 per cent higher than Orlando, who had the second-largest number of fatal shootings per 100,000 people. Among the 100 cities we surveyed, ninety had less than half the number among deadly shootings in St. Louis. The other Missouri metropolis, Kansas City, is also number 6 in the top ten.

While New York City is the most populated city in the United States, with more than twice as many inhabitants as the second most populous city, Los Angeles, it currently has the lowest rate of police-murdered people: 0.2 out of every 100,000 (or one in every half million). It is down 83 percent from Plano, TX, 99th-place city, and down 99.5 percent from St. Louis.

Police killing numbers are part of the argument over using unnecessary force because of the duty to protect and serve, but they're not telling the whole story. When we race by race look at police killings, the data shows a wide disparity. A small number of police-murdered black people is used to suggest a racial gap in law enforcement.
