We asked digital content creators — bloggers, podcasters and video makers — to share in our State of the Side Hustle survey how they make money.

The highlights are:

The hammer is about to fall for employers: 40 percent of the creators we surveyed have a day job, and 73 percent are planning to quit becoming a full time creator. Of those creators who plan to quit their jobs, 44 percent plan to leave in the next 12 months.

The most common channels for monetization are digital products (70 percent), consulting and freelancing (49 percent), and ads, sponsors, or donations (15 percent).

Consulting and freelancing are the highest-earning channel for 41 per cent of companies, while 30 per cent list digital goods as their highest-earned channel.

But this will change, as 73 percent of creators expect to increase the amount they sell goods directly to their audience. Meanwhile, 37% of creators intend to lower their monetization by consulting & freelancing, and 39% intend to lower their monetization by third parties such as advertisers, sponsors and affiliate partners.
