The e-cigarette is a battery-operated device that heats the e-liquid to an aerosol, or "vapor." The e-liquid consists of a mixture of additives, artificial flavorings, and nicotine that is usually stored in a bottle or tablet. Many cartridges can be replenishable and some can be replaced with unused. These applications take on different forms and colours. Some are designed to imitate cigarettes or cigars, or even a USB flash drive.

Vaping explains how a tool is used to inhale the aerosolised e-liquid. The chemicals from the heated aerosols create a dense fog-like layer that looks like cigarette smoke. The properties of the chemicals with e-liquids change when heated. The aerosol particles are harmful to the lining of the lungs when inhaled. Nicotine inhaled from an e-cigarette is as addictive as traditional cigarettes.
