Some AGUINAOVI guides raised the alarm at the beginning of March, before the pandemic case, when they found two adult flamingos trapped with snare traps, in the surroundings of the Caño San Luis, Laguna de Oviedo. When the birds flapped their wings in panic, the guides immediately attempted to free the trapped flamingos in a vain attempt to get into flight. The guides were able to log the rescue operation and told their companions when they returned: "We need to catch all those traps ... Let's go inside."

In these tough times, we wanted to share this beautiful story about the local heroes of the Jaragua National Park's Laguna de Oviedo Nature Guides Association (AGUINAOVI), dedicated to the protection of the biodiversity. More than ever, given the current situation in the Dominican Republic, it is essential to remember the value of community and participatory management in our protected areas, and the important role that local ecotourism plays in the local economy's sustainable development.
