Seventeen percent (n = 21,184) reported current asthma-like symptoms with no asthma diagnosis (during the last 12 months) Eleven percent (n = 13,619) of children reported current asthma-like symptoms as confirmed by physicians. Among the children with asthma-like symptoms and no asthma diagnosis, 20 percent had missed half a day or more of school each month due to wheeze, 25 percent had reduced activity due to wheeze once or twice a month, and 32 percent had sleep disturbances due to wheeze in the last 4 weeks.

Seven percent of children with current asthma-like symptoms but no diagnosis reported one or more visits to the emergency room for asthma-like symptoms, and 5 percent reported last year wheeze-related hospitalizations. Nearly half (47 per cent) of children with asthma diagnosed by a doctor reported missing a half day or more of school in the last month. For asthma-like symptoms, 30 percent of doctor-diagnosed children reported 1 or more emergency room visits in the last year.
