Most countries made substantial strides in reducing SOX emissions; between 1990 and 2011 EEA-33 SOX emissions dropped by 74 per cent. Compared to 1990 in 2011, emissions in all EEA-33 countries were lower, with the exception of Iceland (3.8 times higher) and Turkey (52 percent higher).

The substantial increase in SOX emissions in Iceland, from 21 kt in 1990 to 81 kt in 2011, is due mainly to the reported emissions from the 'Power Generation and Distribution' market, which increased by 51 kt from 1990. This sector alone had already contributed 79 per cent of total emissions from Iceland in 2011. These emissions consist mainly of fugitive emissions from the market for 'other energy generation.'
