Pedestrian injuries are unfortunately on the rise. The Governors Highway Safety Administration announced that 6,590 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2019 , an increase of 5 per cent over the 2018 figures. This is a 60 per cent rise in deaths since 2009.

Nearly half of pedestrian accidents involved the driver and/or pedestrian's unsafe driving habits, such as speed, distracted and drowsy driving and alcohol impairment. Other important factors include talking and texting on mobile phones, eating while driving, programming a GPS, putting on makeup and other behaviors that take the driver's eyes off the road.
