A Third Of The World's Children Are Affected By Lead Poisoning #Infographic

UNICEF has released a new study showing that a previously unknown large-scale, lead poisoning affects children. This estimates that 1 in 3 children have lead levels in their blood at or above 5 micrograms per deciliter (μg / dL), a level requiring intervention. As this chart shows, nearly half of all affected children live in South Asia.

During childhood exposure to lead was associated with numerous mental health and behavioral issues, as well as increased crime and abuse. Serious implications for older children include an increased risk of later-life kidney damage and cardiovascular disease. The report estimates that lower- and middle-income countries cost childhood lead exposure nearly $ 1 trillion in lost economic potential over the lifetime of affected children.
