Nearly one in three-or 32 percent-came from China for all the cars produced worldwide in 2019. As shown in estimates by the automobile manufacturers' association OICA, the world produces fewer cars than it did in 2014, but some Asian markets have managed to raise their production volumes.

India witnessed one of the biggest increases in five years – nearly 15 per cent to 3.6 million cars annually. The largest decline in demand has affected the ailing U.S. automobile industry, which lost 40% of its domestic sales between 2014 and 2019.

Germany still produces fewer cars at home, but German automakers like Volkswagen are a part of increasing growth in China. In 2019, the Chinese market accounted for around 39 per cent of Volkswagen's total sales. Shifting manufacturing sites are just one aspect of the internationalization of the automotive industry. Know-how often migrates with manufacturing, with existing manufacturers entering into joint ventures with Chinese or other Asian companies which typically involve technology transfer.
