A common pastime in the US, proliferated by the COVID-19 pandemic, seems to be returning. A recent study from a financial data firm reveals how stock market trading is America's preferred way of engaging in long-term investments.

In a recent Bankrate study, 28 per cent of adults in the U.S. say they choose to save for money in the stock market they don't expect to use for the next 10 years. At 26 per cent, real estate assets fall closely behind. Throughout the study, conventional currency, savings accounts and deposit certificates yielded just 18 per cent, while precious metals were 14 per cent. Other savings were just 4 per cent, including bitcoin and bonds.

Despite a sharp crash in late February after the initial launch of COVID-19 in the US, the stock market has risen back to almost pre-pandemic levels. New investors and increased market optimism have fueled this rapid recovery and according to Bankrate, millennials are among the most optimistic investors in this era of coronavirus. Around 24 percent of millennials said the pandemic would make them spend more actively over the long term, compared to only 16 percent of Gen X adults and 7 percent of the generation of baby boomers.
