Aside from introducing changes to its Apple Watch and iPad line-up, at its special event in September, Apple also confirmed the imminent release of iOS 14. On September 16, with iPadOS, watchOS and tvOS also receiving updates that week, the new version of the mobile operating system that drives the iPhone was rolled out to customers around the world. Unlike last year, when users of the 2013 iPhone 5s and 2014 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were left behind in the jump to iOS 13, all iPhone models that supported iOS 13 are supported by this year's update.

Apple has greatly expanded the life cycle of iPhone models over the years, as the following chart illustrates. Although two big iOS updates were received for the original iPhone and iPhone 3 G, later versions have received software updates for five to six years. The iPhone 6s was released in 2015 with iOS 9 and will still be compatible with iOS 14 this year.
