Where the Highest Rates of Chlamydia Are Diagnosed in the U.S. #infographic

Where is the highest degree of diagnosis of chlamydia in the United States? We mapped the areas of the nation that recorded the highest rates of diagnosed chlamydia per 100,000 individuals using information collected annually by the CDC on sexually transmitted diseases within the population.

We identified the 50 counties across the U.S. that recorded the highest rates of chlamydia diagnosis using the most recent STD data obtained by the CDC from 2018. For every 100,000, all 50 of these counties had concentrations of well over a thousand diagnosed individuals. Armstrong County in Texas, at 5,215.5, was found to have a prevalence much higher than all of the other counties, which indicates that 5.2% of the population of the county was diagnosed with chlamydia in 2018. This high rate is almost ten times that of the national average of 539.9 per 100,000 cases.

Alaska, which had a chlamydia diagnosis rate of 833 per 100,000 individuals in 2018, is the state that has the highest chlamydia rate. It was also found that Alaska had the highest prevalence of chlamydia in the United States since 2000, when its diagnosis rate was half as high as its most recent tally of 409 per 100,000 individuals. Between 2000 and 2006, Alaska saw a 64 percent rise in cases diagnosed, which the state government claims is due to its expanded screening efforts and improved reporting system. It is no surprise to see that four of the state's counties make it into the top ten of the 50 counties in the U.S. with the highest chlamydia diagnosis rates, with such a high rate of chlamydia being diagnosed in Alaska.

Since 2000, we have also mapped out the chlamydia diagnosis rates by state, reflecting on how much these rates have changed every six years. In each state during 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018, the four maps reflect the chlamydia diagnosis rate, which contains the most recent data available from the CDC.

What states have seen the greatest rises over time? We see the largest percent rise in chlamydia rates between 2000 and 2006, probably from states increasing their amount of testing and reporting on this disease, and Vermont 's increase came out on top during this period. Over the six-year era, Vermont's rate increased by 123 percent, with New York following close behind with a 115 percent rise.

The percentage rise in rate rises was noticeably lower across the board between 2012 and 2018, with Nevada having the country's highest rate increase at 44 percent. Some states also began documenting a decline in their chlamydia diagnosis rate over the course of those six years.During this time, West Virginia had the greatest victory, with a 23 percent reduction in their diagnosis rate.
