I had a Zoom talk with my colleague lately, who told me he would block an hour to read a book or to listen to a podcast because he was not compelled to drive for work. All of us used the time to prepare for the day, rest or amuse us until Covid will take trains, take a car, or travel to work. It was still "calm before the storm" that I considered my hour drive to work. It was an opportunity for mental thinking and planning for the next day. In Germany, where leisure is enjoyed, because the periods of rest contribute to higher levels of productivity, a "false commute" is more frequent than I believed and particularly popular.

Our lives are no longer 9–5 due to erratic schedules, a society that is constantly up to the moment, and a free-for-all job that Covid has preserved and made possible through mobile technology.

The time we spend commuting after March has been reallocated to more work time, resulting in higher productivity levels at the expense of our mental health. In a global study by my firm and Oracle, we found that our personal and professional lives have become increasingly blurred by being distant. Half of the respondents spend at least five more hours working per week, and more than a third spend ten more hours.

All of this extra working time has contributed to stress, anxiety , and depression that has a direct influence on our life at home. It feels almost inescapable, because only a door separates our work from our personal lives, and families , children, and breaks to eat and sleep always open the door. Our study reveals that we are more deprived of sleep, have poor physical health , lower levels of happiness, our family lives suffer and we feel separated from our friends as a result of our work-life combination. While technology has driven and allowed remote work, regardless of what room we are in at home, we are now always accessible. And we're never present with ourselves, our family and friends when we're all on.

At this time, work-life balance has to be a priority and the consistency of our work drops when we are struggling at home and when we are not working, we add bad emotions to our homes. I understood the link between work and life during the early stages of my career and have always said that if you change your job, you can change your entire life because you work all of your life and you can't do it any more now.

But, while we can all accept that versatility is part of operating in today's environment, there is no real manual of guidance on how to do so. These flexibility programs and policies require some degree of customization to cater to and benefit all employees, because we each have a diverse set of life conditions, interests , and needs. As a right of passage, the U.S. community encourages burnout and work is profoundly rooted in our cultures that it often feels like we've built a jail without a key. That's why we should look for inspiration from other nations.

What other countries may benefit from the treatment of working lives

The World Happiness Report ranks countries every year on the basis of their citizens' happiness. The Nordic countries have mostly been at the top of the list for the last eight years, with the USA lagging behind 18th or 19th. Five weeks of paid leave and 37-hour workweek are promised for workers in Danish. 

In Sweden, only 1.1% of workers work for long hours, and they have time to work until the job is done. Employees in Finland have flexible hours so that they can commence or end the day sooner if they decide, and they may decide at least one half-time by the year when and when they work.

In comparison to the Nordic nations , the United States has no mandate to provide paid family or sick leave, or universal childcare support, or even paid holidays and vacations. We live to work, as people work to live in northern countries. And it has made us all accountable for many problems in psychiatric health. Although we must not wait for the magical change in the U.S. working community, we should begin to handle our working lives better, so that they are in equilibrium instead of imbalance.

We must think more carefully about how, where and where we work and live to optimize your output capability, but not at the expense of your family life and health.  Instead of the old one-hour tour to work, for example, bring your spouse on a socially distant walk or brunch. You should eat at the kitchen table, instead of isolating yourself. In order to pause your day and compel yourself to disagree, you should put 30 minutes on your calendar at least three or four times daily.

In order to successfully handle our working lives, we need a stronger relationship with technology as well. In your home office and out of the kitchen or bedroom, hold all of your electronics. Just like you set technology limits, you should set them with your colleagues so that you are not always on-call. 

When the team knows you're done working, have a certain time every day so that they don't keep emailing you and messaging you. Try to maintain a routine to make you feel better and happier by establishing routines that you can stick to. And, most importantly, have work-life conversations with the individuals with whom you work because others' actions can either benefit or hurt your work-life.

By making work-life a priority, since a healthy and happier employee can work harder and deliver higher quality work, we will all live better lives and not at the expense of our productivity. It's hard to concentrate and achieve your full potential at work when you suffer from fatigue, burnout, and are dissatisfied. Starting today, let's just bring it in.
