On Thursday morning, with the election results already hanging in the balance, the 2020 presidential race is shaping up to be one of the closest in American history. If it is, choosing who is going to be the new president of the United States could come down to one state and a few electoral votes.

As the following map shows, the victory of George W. Bush over Al Gore in 2000 is also the nearest contest to date, with Bush winning 271 electoral votes to 266 for Gore. Back then, because of a controversy about a ballot recount in Florida, a major swing state that eventually settled the race, the outcome remained unclear for weeks after election day.
